Raising funds to help Oxford's homeless people
The Oxford Sleep-Out is organised by a group of Oxford's homeless charities (Charity No. 297806)
The Churches Housing Coalition (Oxford) re-launched the Oxford Sleep-Out in 1996. Until his death in 2002, David Belton managed the event with the help of a voluntary committee, under the auspices of the Oxford Night Shelter. Volunteers from homeless agencies in Oxford took over the event in April 2002 and in their first year raised £23,500. It is planned that the coordinator changes each year to ensure fresh ideas and to share "ownership". Funds are allocated to agencies by an independent panel and distributed to local charities and agencies providing shelter and support for Oxford's homeless people. All funds raised support local homeless charities, which have included:
Break-Through is an Oxford based voluntary organisation that provides small basic household items to people in temporary accommodation and /or living in poverty. Most items are re-cycled but often there is insufficient bedding available and these have to be bought. Money raised will be used to purchase new duvets and pillows. Up to 10 homes each week benefit from this service. www.break-through.org.ukLucy Faithfull House has 58 direct access beds for men and women over the age of 18, in single rooms. There are shared lounges and bathrooms. There is a laundry and games room, a central dining room where meals are served three times a day. Self-catering flats exist for those residents working towards more independent living plus 24 single rooms in three move-on houses located within easy walking distance of the city centre. The House is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. www.twosaints.org.uk/services/Lucy_Faithfull_House.phpElmore Community Services is a floating support team that works with people with multiple and complex needs who fall through the gaps of other services. The money donated for the sleep out goes to our welfare fund that helps the clients in practical ways for example paying for travel to funerals, buying a much needed pair of shoes, or some food in emergency situations. www.elmoreteam.org.ukEmmaus The new Emmaus community opened in Oxford in 2009. It offers homeless people not only accommodation but also work in its Furniture Superstore. This gives the opportunity to gain self-respect and self-worth, through meaningful employment and the chance to help others. They collect donated re-usable furniture, electrical appliances and other household items from most Oxfordshire locations (and some others near Oxford) and sell these on at very reasonable prices. www.emmausoxford.orgThe Gatehouse opens six days a week as a refuge for those on the street. But we're more than just a soup kitchen: as well as much-needed food there's a good library of books, a well-stocked clothing store, daily newspapers and access to the internet - all provided free of charge. Money from the annual Sleep--Out has helped to keep us in business for the past ten years. Our core funding does not cover items such as emergency train fares, socks for an interview, passport photos, new reading glasses, fees for an evening class.......................all essential ingredients to help homeless people get back on their feet. Thank you to all who participate. www.oxhop.org.ukSimon House is a hostel situated in the heart of Oxford and offers support to people with addiction problems, mental health and homeless issues.
